More than 23 million Nigerians are now enrolled in the national health insurance system. This represents important progress in Nigeria’s journey towards Universal Health Coverage. To strengthen financial protection for Nigerians facing serious health and social challenges, the National Health Insurance (NHIA) is expanding access to essential services across cancer care, HIV and tuberculosis treatment, including maternal and newborn health. Through an expanded partnership with Roche, the NHIA is improving access to selected oncology medicines through a cost-sharing arrangement. This intervention complements cancer-related services covered under the NHIA benefits and payment structure, including mammography, CT and MRI scans, cancer-related diagnostic tests and radiotherapy. The NHIA is also extending financial protection to people living with HIV and tuberculosis through the Global Fund Resilient and Sustainable Systems for Health grant. Through financing support for Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care and Fistula-Free programmes, more than 93,000 women and newborns have been reached.
